What is ‘The Vest’?

The Vest™ system is a medical device designed for clearing excess mucus from the lungs. Used widely in homes and hospitals, it consists of an inflatable vest connected by flexible tubes to an air-pulse generator. The generator rapidly inflates and deflates the vest, gently compressing and releasing the chest wall. This technology – called high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO) – loosens, thins and moves secretions toward central airways so they may be more easily cleared. The Vest system simplifies respiratory therapy routines, allows user independence, and is associated with better treatment adherence.

Studies show that The Vest system therapy significantly improves secretion clearance and helps sustain pulmonary functions. It is used by more than 160,000 cystic fibrosis patients in their homes and in over 95 percent of Cystic Fibrosis Centers of Excellence. Cleared to market by the Food and Drug Administration since 1988.

Recently, we added the Model CA-3000 CoughAssist System to our offering.

What is ‘CoughAssist’?

CoughAssist clears secretions in the airways by gradually applying a positive pressure, then quickly switching to negative pressure. This quick shift in air pressure produces simulates a natural cough by allowing for a high expiratory flow.

The Benefits of CoughAssist includes removing secretions from the lungs and thereby reducing the occurrence of respiratory infections.  It is a safe, noninvasive alternative to suctioning and the device is easy for patients and caregivers to operate.

The CoughAssist can be used with a face mask, mouthpiece or with an adapter to a patient’s endotracheal or tracheostomy tube and is approved for home use in adults and children.  Generally, we carry only the automatic model.
